"Regardless of how good or efficient we as physicians are, we can make mistakes when writing prescriptions...the wrong name, the wrong dosage, a decimal point in the place......all of these errors can have potential serious effects for patients. Using eRx NOW, I'm able to get my prescriptions out safely from anywhere I have access to a computer."

“My patients think it’s cool when I send their scripts electronically. They don’t have to carry anything home, they just have to show up to their pharmacy and it’s there.” -Linda Green, MD, Havertown, PA

Your office could save $15,700 a year per physician by reducing administrative complexities related to prescriptions, according to a 2004 Medical Group Management Association report.

Voices for E-Prescribing Getting Louder
Newt Gingrich and Senator John Kerry co-authored an op-ed piece about electronic prescribing that was published in the Wall Street Journal on November 16. In the editorial they outline a workable plan to increase adoption of electronic prescribing technology. Senator Kerry plans to introduce legislation that does two things: 1) makes bonus payments to Medicare physicians who use or adopt electronic prescribing, and 2) if a majority of Medicare providers are still not e-prescribing within a few years, then CMS will issue a requirement for Medicare physicians to use the technology if they wish to participate in the program.

Riverside Newest Regional Supporter
NEPSI proudly welcomes the Riverside Physician Network of Riverside, California www.rpndocs.com as our newest Regional Supporter. Regional supporters champion the shared ePrescribing mission and engage in the delivery of the NEPSI offering to their members and constituents. Riverside Physician Network (RPN), formed in 1984, is an Independent Physician Association (IPA) serving the healthcare needs of over 54,000 Inland Empire residents. Today, it is the largest, longest-lived and most stable Independent Physician Association in Riverside.
Riverside Physician Network is a physician owned local network focused on meeting the health care needs of their members. Members have the opportunity to choose their own family doctor from over 65 local premier primary care physicians and over 120 specialists. Many of these physicians own and govern RPN, making decisions at a local level about treatment ranging from diagnosis to recovery. For patients, this provides a personal touch in the delivery of health care. Their doctors understand the health care needs of their patients better because they live and work in Riverside. Since 1984, Riverside Physician Network has allowed area physicians to focus on what they do best -- caring for patients.
NEPSI welcomes healthcare champions, from individual providers to national, regional and local stakeholders, to join us in the fight for patient safety. If your organization would like to become a supporter, please contact us today.

Legislative Update
Make Your Voice Heard TODAY!
The NEPSI sponsors are coming together to support another electronic prescribing initiative that will change the landscape for healthcare throughout the entire country. The NEPSI coalition is working with the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) to help drive passage of legislation this year that would require all Medicare physicians to use electronic prescribing starting in 2010. PCMA is leading this charge and started running TV and print ad campaigns starting this week to support the effort. The next 14 days are critical and PCMA is asking for the support of the NEPSI sponsors to pass this legislation this year.
Please join a briefing call with Mark Merritt, President and CEO of PCMA, today at 11:30 am PST (2:30 pm EST). He will update the group on the current efforts and detail how you can help. Deadline for Implementing Tamper Resistant Script Pads Extended
Legislation signed by President Bush in late September extended the deadline for the use of tamper-proof prescription pads for Medicaid patients until April 1, 2008. As of that date, all prescriptions for Medicaid patients will have to be written on prescription pads that contain at least one industry-recognized feature to prevent copying, erasure, or counterfeiting. One of the exceptions to this mandate is electronically delivered prescriptions.

E-Prescribing Benefits
Benefit of E-Prescribing to Physicians
The successful implementation of electronic prescribing (eRx) nationwide will result from a variety of sponsors working together, sharing resources to offer eRx as a vehicle for change. Sponsors of the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative (NEPSI) support the delivery of an eRx offering with broad-scale appeal. As vital members of the NEPSI coalition, these sponsors are dedicated to engaging resources to make eRx possible with maximum benefit to prescribers and patients. To that end, our national sponsor Dell has produced an ePrescribing video and has posted it on StudioDell, where Dell shares its expertise on emerging technologies and uses interactive tools to communicate directly with consumers, small business owners and IT professionals. StudioDell gets close to 550,000 viewers a week. This video featuring eRx NOW will air on the "Small Business Channel" and is targeted directly to physicians. The goal is to communicate the efficiencies and benefits to physicians enabled by e-prescribing, such as work flow improvements, cost savings and safety, ultimately helping driving adoption of the technology.
