Encouraging Developments for Broader Use of E-Prescribing
Pressure is growing on CMS to mandate the use of e-prescribing by any doctors who participate in Medicare. Recently legislation was introduced in the Senate to mandate electronic prescribing by 2011. It would include financial incentives as well as penalties for lack of compliance physicians during the transition. The House will introduce similar legislation soon. HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt has thrown his support behind these efforts as well.

Pressure Building on DEA to Allow E-Prescribing of Controlled Substances

On December 4, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to discuss the need for electronic prescribing of controlled substances. Both Senators and private sectors representatives urged the Drug Enforcement Administration to reverse its ban on electronic prescribing of controlled substances. Panel members were: Joseph Rannazzisi, Deputy Assistant Administrator, DEA Office of Diversion Control, Tony Trenkle, CMS’ Office of e-Health Standards and Services, Laura Adams, President and CEO, Rhode Island Quality Institute, Kevin Hutchinson, CEO of SureScripts, David Miller, Chief Security Officer, Covisint and Mike Podgurski, R.Ph., Vice President, Pharmacy Services, Rite Aid Corporation. The DEA now has 60 days to respond with a draft plan.

E-Prescribing Benefits
Benefit of E-Prescribing to Physicians
Dr. Azar Korbey has been a user of electronic prescribing for more than a decade. Over the years, his practice has realized significant benefits from using this technology. They were able to reduce pharmacy quotes from 22 per day per nurse to only 2. The total impact of this savings along was $13,866 per year per nurse. Here’s the math:

20 calls/day x 8 mins/call = 160 minutes or 2.67 hours per day

2.67 hours x $20/hr (avg nurse wage) = $53/day

$53/day x 5 days = $266/wk

$266/wk x 52 wks = $13,866/yr/nurse
